Lord Blackwell

Lord Blackwell,

Skills and experience: Lord Blackwell has extensive insurance, banking, regulatory and public policy experience gained from senior positions in a wide range of industries. Lord Blackwell’s deep financial services knowledge and experience, leadership qualities and credibility with key stakeholders, made him the unanimous choice of the Board to succeed Sir Winfried as Chairman of Lloyds Banking Group. Lord Blackwell has an MA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, and a Ph.D in Finance and Economics and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania.

External appointments: Governor of the Yehudi Menuhin School and a member of the Governing Body of the Royal Academy of Music.

Former appointments: Lord Blackwell was the Chairman of Scottish Widows Group before moving to Group Chairman in 2014. He is a former Senior Independent Director of Standard Life and chaired their UK Life and Pensions Board. He was previously a Non-Executive Director of Halma plc, Dixons Group and SEGRO, Chairman of Interserve plc, a member of the Board of the Centre for Policy Studies and a Non-Executive Board Member of Ofcom and of the Office of Fair Trading. He was a partner of McKinsey & Co. and a Director of Group Development at NatWest Group. From 1995 to 1997, Lord Blackwell was Head of the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit and was appointed a Life Peer in 1997.

Anita Frew

Anita Frew, Deputy Chairman and Independent Director

Skills and experience: Anita has extensive board, financial and general management experience across a range of sectors, including banking, asset management, manufacturing and utilities. Her breadth of experience and strong leadership qualities make her an effective Deputy Chairman and Senior Independent Director. She has a BA (Hons) in International Business from the University of Strathclyde, a MRes in Humanities and Philosophy from the University of London and an Honorary DSc for contribution to industry and finance from University of Cranfield.

External Appointments: Anita is Chairman of Croda International Plc and a Non-Executive Director of BHP Billiton.

Former appointments: Anita was Chairman of Victrex plc, having previously been its Senior Independent Director. She was also previously the Senior Independent Director of Aberdeen Asset Management and IMI plc, an Executive Director of Abbott Mead Vickers, Director of Corporate Development at WPP Group and a Non-Executive Director of Northumbrian Water. She has held various investment and marketing roles at Scottish Provident and the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Alan Dickinson

Alan Dickinson, Independent Director

Skills and experience: Alan is a highly regarded retail and commercial banker having spent 37 years with the Royal Bank of Scotland, most notably as Chief Executive of RBS UK, and more recently as a Non-executive Director of Nationwide Building Society and Chairman of its Risk Committee. Alan’s strategic focus and core banking experience complements the balance of skills on our Board. Alan is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and the Royal Statistical Society. He has an MBA from the Manchester Business School and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Birmingham.

External appointments: Alan is the Chairman of Urban & Civil plc and a Governor of Motability.

Former appointments: Alan was Chief Executive of RBS UK and a member of its Executive Committee. He was formerly Chairman of Brown, Shipley & Co Limited and a Non-executive Director of Nationwide Building Society, Carpetright plc and Willis Limited where he was Chairman of its Risk Committee.

Simon Henry

Simon Henry, Independent Director

Skills and experience: Simon has deep international experience in board level strategy and execution. His extensive knowledge of financial markets, treasury and risk management enables him to fulfil the role of Audit Committee Chair and for SEC purposes, the role of Audit Committee Financial Expert. His background and experience is also of particular value in our Board Risk Committee. Simon has a BA in Mathematics and an MA from the University of Cambridge. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

External appointments: Simon is Non-Executive Director of Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Limited. He is a member of the Main Committee of the 100 Group of UK FTSE CFOs, Chair of the European Round Table CFO Taskforce, member of the Advisory Panel of CIMA and of the Advisory Board of the Centre for European Reform.

Former appointments: Simon was Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director of Royal Dutch Shell plc from May 2009 to March 2017. He was also a member of the Market Practitioner Panel Steering Committee - UK Fair and Effective Markets Review.

Lord Lupton CBE

Skills and experience: Lord Lupton has extensive international corporate experience having advised UK and international companies on a wide variety of major transactions and brings broad experience to the Board. He co-founded the London office of Greenhill & Co., in 1998 and was Chairman of Greenhill Europe until 19 May 2017. He became a life peer in October 2015 and is a former Treasurer of the Conservative Party. He sits on the House of Lords Select Committee on Charities.

External appointments: Lord Lupton is a Senior Advisor to Greenhill Europe and he is Chairman of the Trustees of The Lovington Foundation. 

Former appointments: Lord Lupton was Deputy Chairman for Baring Brothers. He was a Trustee of the British Museum, Governor of Downe House School and a Trustee and Chairman of Dulwich Picture Gallery. He has been on the Advisory Board of Grange Park Opera and has been a member of the International Advisory Board of Global Leadership Foundation.

Deborah McWhinney

Skills and experience: Deborah has an extensive executive background in managing technology, operations and new digital innovations across banking, payments and institutional investment. She broadens the Board’s diversity from a global market perspective.

External appointments: Deborah is an Independent Director of Fluor Corporation and IHS Markit Ltd., a member of the Supervisory Board of Fresenius Medical Care AG & Co. KgaA and a Trustee of the California Institute of Technology. She is also a Trustee of the Institute for Defense Analyses, an organisation to promote national security and scientific analyses on matters of interest to the United States Government.

Former appointments: Deborah is a former Chief Executive Officer, Global Enterprise Payments and President, Personal Banking and Wealth Management at Citibank. She was previously President of Institutional Services at Charles Schwab Corporation and had prior executive roles at Engage Media Services Group, Visa International and Bank of America, where she held senior roles in Consumer Banking.

Nick Prettejohn

Nick Prettejohn, Independent Director

Skills and experience: Nick has significant financial services experience, particularly in insurance where he has served as Chief Executive of Lloyd’s of London and Prudential UK and Europe as well as Chairman of Brit Insurance.  He has the knowledge and experience to provide valuable insight and contribute effectively as a Non-Executive Director and Member of the Audit Committee and Risk Committee. Nick has a First Class Degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the Balliol College, University of Oxford.

External appointments: Nick is Chairman of the Royal Northern College of Music and the Financial Conduct Authority’s Financial Advice Working Group. He is a member of the Board of Opera Ventures.  

Former appointments: Nick was a member of the BBC Trust. He was a Non-Executive Director of the Prudential Regulation Authority.  Prior to this role, he was Chairman of Brit Insurance and a Non-executive Director of Legal and General Plc. He is a former Chief Executive of Lloyd’s of London and a member of the Lloyd’s Council. From 2006 to 2009 he was Chief Executive of Prudential UK and Europe and a member of the Prudential plc Board. From 2007 until 2009 he was Chairman of the Financial Services Practitioner Panel and until 2017 Chairman of the Britten-Pears Foundation.

Stuart Sinclair

Skills and experience: Stuart has extensive experience in retail banking and insurance and also brings to the Board wider experience in consumer finance and asset finance.

External appointments: Stuart is a Non-executive Director and Chair of the Risk Committee at Provident Financial Plc. He is the Senior Independent Director at QBE Insurance (Europe) Limited.

Former appointments: Stuart has been a Non-executive Director of TSB Banking Group plc and TSB Bank plc, and was also a former Senior Independent Director at Swinton Group Limited. Other roles have included Non-executive Director at Vitality Life and Vitality Health, LV Group, President and Chief Operating Officer of Aspen Insurance, Chief Executive Officer roles at GE Capital's Consumer Finance division both in the UK and China, and Director of UK Retail Banking then Chief Executive Officer of Tesco Personal Finance at Royal Bank of Scotland. He was previously a Council Member of The Royal Institute for International Affairs.  His early career included Managing Consultant at Braxton Associates and Partner at Mercer Management Consulting (now Oliver Wyman).

Sara Weller CBE

Sara Weller, Independent Director

Skills and experience: With a background in retail and associated sectors, including financial services, Sara brings a broad perspective to the Board. She is a strong advocate of customers and of the application of new technology, both of which directly support Lloyds Banking Group’s strategy. Sara has considerable experience of boards at both executive and non-executive level. She has an MA in Chemistry from Oxford University.

External appointments: Sara is a Non-Executive Director of United Utilities Group and Chair of their Remuneration Committee as well as the Lead Non-Executive Director at the Department for Work and Pensions, and a Governing Council Member of Cambridge University. She is also the Chairman of the Planning Inspectorate and Board member at the Higher Education Funding Council.

Former appointments: Sara is the former Managing Director of Argos. She held various senior positions at J Sainsbury including Deputy Managing Director and served on its Board between January 2002 and May 2004. She was Lead Non-Executive Director at the Department of Communities and Local Government, a Non-Executive Director of Mitchells & Butler and also held senior management roles for Abbey National and Mars Confectionery.
