'After the War': cartoon drawn by Robert Shirlaw, clerk at Bank of Scotland's London office, early 1920s.

This striking illustration, another from Ledger No. 99, is by Robert Shirlaw. Shirlaw was a clerk at Bank of Scotland’s London Office and the principal artist of the drawings in the Ledger. He joined up in 1916, and saw action on the Western Front. In early 1918 he was commissioned as an officer.

Having survived the war, Shirlaw returned to the London office, where he penned this sketch. Others were not so lucky - five of his colleagues were killed.

In total, almost 600 men from the Bank served King and country. Of these, 87 lost their lives. All are commemorated on the Bank of Scotland war memorial.
