This letter was sent to managers of all Lloyds Bank branches on 31st July.

Warning against ‘timid’ customers looking to ‘obtain gold for hoarding purposes’, it clearly illustrates the sense of panic and uncertainty felt by the public at the time.

The instruction to restrict the issue of gold coin anticipated legislation passed by the government a few days later.
