Dentist duo breathe new life into village practice

Higgins & Winter Dental Practice & Implant Centre has seen its patient numbers soar since dentists Kevin Higgins and Richard Winter acquired it in 2011. The practice was previously home to one dentist and only opened three days a week, but the new owners have invested £150,000 in a refurbishment and extending the building to include three surgeries. The practice has seen its patient list grow to top 3,000 from an original 700, and turnover has grown five-fold.

Ripe for development

Kevin and Richard believed that the practice was being underutilised and saw the potential for it to expand and launch new services. In order to do this, they realised they would need additional financing to help fund the development.

We knew that the practice was in the right location and could see that it was ripe for development. We were also able to identify a range of services that weren’t being provided at the time.

Word of mouth

The practice bought its building thanks to a Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking business loan. Lloyds Bank Commercial Finance was also able to support the practice in its early days with a £47,000 hire purchase facility to buy a CT scanner, used to take x-rays for dental treatment.

Kevin also credits word of mouth referrals as a key part of the practice’s success. It has worked hard to become a key part of the local community with recent visits to local primary schools, nurseries and the Rotary Club to speak about dental health. Kevin and Richard took over an existing NHS contract, which they have not only fulfilled but have outperformed its requirements.

Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking had specific knowledge of healthcare and understood our story right away. It offered really competitive rates and we struck up a good relationship with the team
