Our Museums

We are extremely proud of our history and heritage at Lloyds Banking Group.

Wherever possible we make our historical collections accessible to the wider community. As part of this initiative, we maintain two public museums. These are open all year round, and are free of charge. Both are housed in buildings that played a key role in the history of British banking.

The Museum on the Mound

The Museum on the Mound is located in Edinburgh, in the Scottish Headquarters of Lloyds Banking Group. This landmark building began life as the Head Office of Bank of Scotland - Scotland’s very first bank. It still fulfils this function today.

The Museum charts the history of banking in Scotland, and explores the theme of money… in all its shapes and forms.

The Savings Banks Museum

The Savings Banks Museum is situated at Ruthwell, in Dumfriesshire. This small and unassuming building is the birthplace of the international savings bank movement. It was here, in 1810, that the Reverend Henry Duncan established Ruthwell Parish Bank - the world's first self-supporting savings bank.

The Museum looks at the life of this extraordinary man, and at the global phenomenon he created.
