June 2014 sees the start of the World Cup in Brazil. So this month we thought we’d share with you a rather lovely photograph of two Union Bank of Scotland football teams from 1906.
Football has long been a popular pastime for staff of the Group. Until relatively recently, there were inter-bank cup competitions. From the 1970s there were even ladies teams - some with memorable names such as ‘Hot Pants United’.
This photograph is one of the oldest pieces of football memorabilia in our collections. It shows members of staff from the Glasgow and Edinburgh offices of the Union Bank of Scotland (part of Bank of Scotland from 1955).
The occasion was an ‘intercity’ match, which took place at Meadowside in Glasgow on 13th of April 1906. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to have been a terribly exciting game. Information on the back of the photograph states that the result was ‘A draw. No scoring.’
It all seems a far cry from the glamour and razzmatazz of the modern game.
