Money for Life

Helping to increase financial capability and money management

Money for Life is Lloyds Banking Group's award-winning £10 million financial capability and personal money skills programme which aims to equip communities across the UK with the skills and capabilities they need to make the most of their money. The programme is targeted at young people and adults in the Further Education, work-based learning and community learning sectors. We provide practitioners, support workers and tutors with the skills they need to talk confidently about money management, and to support their learners to stay out of debt and save for the future.

Money for Life aims to deliver vital financial capability learning where it is needed most. It equips practitioners across the UK with tailored resources to improve their confidence and knowledge of financial capability and enables them to pass on that knowledge to community and Further Education learners.

The programme consists of two core strands – the Money for Life Qualifications and the Money for Life Challenge.

In addition, we aim to support relevant research reports, industry and community events that seek to raise awareness of financial education issues across the UK.

Money for Life was shortlisted in Business in the Community’s Building Stronger Communities Award and was awarded a ‘Big Tick’ in 2014 for the third year running.

Money for Life Qualifications

The Money for Life Qualifications provide accredited, fully-funded training to enable community support workers in the not-for-profit, public or further education sectors across the UK to embed personal money management skills at a local level.

Money for Life provides training resources to enable those interested in promoting financial capability within communities to gain Open College Network-accredited qualifications. Adopting a ‘train-the-trainer’ approach encourages sustainability of the money management skills and knowledge allowing them to become embedded in communities.

We have committed to accrediting 4,000 community support workers, through Teach Others and Money Mentors, to deliver money management on the front line by 2017

Through the Money for Life Qualifications the programme aims to:

  • Deliver vital financial capability learning where it is needed most
  • Equip community support workers across the UK with the skills, knowledge and resources they need to deliver effective money management and improve financial capability in their communities

There are three Money for Life Qualifications:

  • Teach Others – for those who aim to educate groups of learners on financial capability in organised workshops
  • Money Mentors – for those looking to learn how to give one-to-one support in money management
  • Teach Me – for those who want to improve their personal  financial knowledge before educating learners or clients

Money for Life Challenge

The Money for Life Challenge is a national competition open to groups of young people aged 16 – 24.

The Challenge aims to find the most successful and innovative ways of improving the money management skills of young people and their communities.

Groups of young people in further education, training or community organisations are encouraged to apply for a £500 grant to help them run a money management project in their community. 300 projects will receive a grant in 2014/15 and aim to compete in their National Final.

One group from each of Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, North of England and South of England will then be chosen as the National Final winner, by an expert panel of judges, and go through to the UK Grand Final in London on 28 May 2015.

Each National final will also send a ‘People’s prize winner’ to the UK Grand Final, to compete for the UK-wide People’s Prize.
