Building skills and employability

Shaping careers, changing lives

During 2017, we created a further 1,200 apprenticeship positions within the Group, bringing the total to 5,500 since 2012. Of the new apprenticeship opportunities taken up by external candidates, 44 per cent were filled by candidates from the UK’s most disadvantaged areas.

The apprenticeship programmes are open to people of all ages and are offered both internally across the Group and to external candidates. They provide opportunities for colleagues who are just starting their career, for those who are looking to excel in their role, or maybe take a change in direction.

Helping people progress

We are proud of the fact that many of our apprentices flourish with us after their apprenticeship, including Nicholas who works as a Personal Banking Adviser in our Lloyds Bank branch in Maidenhead.

Nicholas was applying for a Customer Services Assistant role when an opportunity arose to apply for the apprenticeship scheme.

The apprenticeship caught my eye because it offered great insight into the business – over and above the day job. It encouraged me to consider the wider Group and how my role relates to risk, service and communication.

Building confidence

Nicholas joined the Group as a Customer Service Assistant and completed an apprenticeship in Providing Financial Services (QCF) Level 2.

The programme helped Nicholas to increase his knowledge and understanding of the Bank’s products and services. He completed a broad range of modules, from health and safety, to the importance of good customer service, to understanding the Group and the wider financial services industry.

The apprenticeship has enabled me to have better conversations about the services we provide our customers and to make effective referrals to help customers. It certainly gave me the confidence and inspired me to become a Personal Banking Adviser, and to play my part in Helping Britain Prosper.

Our commitment

The Group’s award-winning apprenticeship programmes have changed the lives and shaped the careers of over 5,500 of our colleagues. As a Group we created over 1,200 apprenticeship opportunities in 2017 and we are committed to our Helping Britain Prosper Plan target to create another 2,500 apprenticeship opportunities by 2020.

The Helping Britain Prosper Plan was launched in 2014 and unites our Group and our colleagues to meet targets to address core socio-economic issues facing the UK.

We believe we can use our scale and reach to help people, businesses and communities to prosper, because we know that when Britain prospers, we can too.
