Lloyds Scholars Programme

Helping students aim high

Young people from low income backgrounds can sometimes feel that top universities like Oxford or Cambridge aren’t for them. The Lloyds Scholars programme helps provide them with the financial and personal support to build their confidence and aim high.

2018 was the 7th year of the programme, and saw Lloyds Banking Group awarded ‘Highest Impact Employer Initiative’ in the 2018 upReach Student Social Mobility Awards.

Widening Participation

Lloyds’ significant investment greatly eases the financial concerns that scholars might have during their time at university allowing them them the opportunity to gain real-world experiences and employability skills through volunteering and internship opportunities.

We also seeks to widen access, one example being our support of the IntoOxford programme. This scheme aimed at Year 10 students offers experiences of subjects, themes and academic areas they have not been exposed to and leads a guided self–exploration of these new ideas.

A level playing field

“The bursary support is extremely valuable to me. It means that I do not have to feel anxious about making financial decisions such as joining new clubs and societies, and I feel like it puts me on a level playing field with everyone else. I also appreciate that a firm genuinely wants to help my development and it is not simply about taking up a job with them at the end, as it allows me to be more open with my mentor about my personal development”

Celebrating Lloyds Scholars

Since its inception in 2011, nearly 900 students have benefited from our Lloyds Scholars programme, which provides the financial support they need to study at university along with a wider package of resources, including mentoring and internships.

Oxford University has welcomed 94 Lloyds Scholars so far, and those who have taken the programme are very positive about the experience.
