Job description

The Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team in the Digital Channel Servicing Lab is looking for an experienced engineer with strong development skills and a focus on DevOps/SRE practices.

As a senior engineer, you’ll work in a multi-disciplinary team that supports the core of the Scottish Widows digital estate. Your role will help improve the speed and reliability of change across our engineering teams, while ensuring services are stable and scalable for customers.

This role may suit a backend or full-stack engineer looking to reduce engineering toil, or someone with a DevOps/SRE background seeking a new challenge.

What you’ll do

  • Investigate, fix and remediate service issues to improve the performance and the reliability of our diverse application estate.

  • Contribute to and/or lead post incident reviews and drive problem resolution to prevent recurrence.

  • Identify and eliminate toil through automation with a focus on continuous improvement.

  • Create pro-active monitoring and observability solutions to help us see issues before our customers do .

  • Define and measure Service Level Objectives and Service Level Indicators.

  • Lead initiatives within the team, and help mentor more junior colleagues.

What you’ll need

  • Strong knowledge of SRE principles (SLI, SLO & SLA) and how these can be implemented in practice.

  • Can independently design, implement, manage and optimise cloud deployments, proficient in using orchestrations tools such as Jenkins, GitHub, and Harness.

  • Strong DevOps understanding, including experience of Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD pipelines, such as Terraform, Jenkins, Harness, or alternatives such as Azure DevOps.

  • Confident programming and troubleshooting issues in at least one of the following languages: Java, Groovy, Python, Ruby, JavaScript, PowerShell or Bash/Shell.

  • Experience of developing for, or administrating, Kubernetes.

  • Experience in identifying toil and building automated solutions to remove it.

  • Experience working with a broad set of GCP products (or extensive experience with another Public Cloud platform, such as Azure or AWS) and Cloud security and networking.

  • Experience in Cloud monitoring tools, preferably Dynatrace.

It would be great if you also had

  • Experience in the banking and finance industry.

  • Used Jira, Confluence and understood Agile working practices.

  • Certifications in GCP or another cloud platform, such as Azure or AWS.
