Sustainability

We’re serious about sustainability and we want to become a leader in helping the UK transition to becoming a more sustainable, low carbon economy.
Our targets

Carbon
In 2019 we reached our 2030 carbon reduction goal, 11 years early.

Energy
We have joined The Climate Group’s EP100 campaign, making a commitment to improve energy productivity by 80% by 2033.

Waste
In 2019 we cut our total operational waste by 41% compared to 2015 and by 13% compared with 2018.
Hear what our CEO Antonio Horta-Osório has to say about our unique opportunity to help build a green recovery:

How we're working sustainably
One of our key ambitions is reducing our own carbon footprint and challenging ourselves to ensure our own consumption of resources, goods and services is sustainable. A big part of this is our #WarOnWaste and the ambitious target to reduce our operational waste by 80% by 2025. A large part of this waste is disposable plastics and we have had some great initiatives recently that aim to tackle the problem:
- Keep Cups – We’ve rolled out reusable Keep Cups to even more colleagues so we can eliminate single-use vending machine cups in all our offices.
- Reusable water bottles – Early this year we rolled out an initiative which saw every colleague receive a stainless steel reusable water bottle allowing colleagues to bring and refill instead of using single-use plastic cups and bottled water.

"I had my ‘oh crikey’ moment about the urgency of climate action in a pensions team meeting."
Sustainability manager Lily is helping the Scottish Widows pension scheme make more sustainable investments, ensuring that our customers (and colleagues!) will be retiring into a greener future.

How we're making sustainable changes
"My team play a simple but critical role within our broader sustainability strategy, demonstrating our commitment to take action on our own carbon footprint."
Naomi, Head of Property Design at Lloyds Banking Group, talks about her role in reducing the Group's carbon footprint.

Financing a green future
As the UK’s largest financial services group, we can make a real difference to tackling climate change by helping to finance a greener future together. We think this will require new ways of living, working and investing for our business and our customers.

We work in an agile way
Flexible working is key to ensuring our colleagues can have a rewarding career and a healthy lifestyle balance.

Our charitable partnerships
Our four independent charitable Foundations are critical to our vision of tackling social disadvantage. We partner with local charities to help overcome complex social issues and rebuild lives.
