A life-long career in tech, from app development to AI innovation

I’ve worked in tech all my life. From starting in software research, to becoming an app developer back in 2007 when the first iPhone launched, to now leading a team working on the Lloyds Bank app. The great thing about tech is it’s always evolving, which means there’s always something new to learn, or something innovative to be developing.

AI has been the talk of the party for a few years now, but it’s something I’ve been passionate about for over two decades. Back in 2008, I co-authored a paper on AI agents and the importance of whole system issues and the integration and test cycle for getting AI techniques working and accepted in an application.

"Tech has been my lifelong passion, so it’s great to work with people who have the same passion."

During Covid, I decided to go back to the classroom and studied for a Masters in Artificial Intelligence. I graduated in 2024, and it got me thinking about my next career move. I wanted to be able to combine by passion for both AI and mobile app experience, but I also wanted a role that allowed me to work face-to-face with my team.

So, I moved to Lloyds Banking Group at the start of this year, to manage a team in the Devices Lab, working on the Lloyds Bank app. A core focus for us is developing new AI features to give our customers a better experience. One of the newest features I’ve worked on is the AI powered search feature, which makes it easier for customers to self-serve.

Tech has been my lifelong passion, so it’s great to work with people who have the same passion and be able to mentor university and bootcamp graduates and pass on my knowledge and experience.

As a team, we are predominantly based in the Bristol hub as part of our hybrid working approach. For those that haven’t been to our Bristol hub before, picture this: A bright open office, overlooking the harbour. It’s a great place to get creative and collaborate as a team.

When I’m not immersed in all things tech and AI, I love to spend time with my family and stay active – whether that be running or climbing. But being completely honest, my main hobby at the moment is keeping our newborn entertained!
