Job description

JOB TITLE: Technical Application Specialist (Cryptography)

SALARY: £72,702 - £80,780

LOCATION(S): Edinburgh or Leeds

HOURS: Full time (This role will include a requirement to work as part of a 24x7 on-call rota)

WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time at our location listed above.

About this opportunity

The Chief Security Office (CSO) plays a vital role in delivering Lloyds Banking Group's vision of putting customers at the heart of everything we do, helping Britain prosper, and protecting the Group and its customers and suppliers from security threats.

As a Senior Technical Application Specialist in our Crypto team, you'll play a key role in operating, securing, and evolving code and programs that run primarily on z/OS platforms. This is a unique opportunity to work on initiatives that will transform the way mainframe cryptography is consumed, as well as write and develop code that provides various Cryptographic functionality.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain z/OS‑based code and utilities that provide cryptographic services to integrate with enterprise security tooling.

  • Write new code and enhancements to deliver cryptographic functionality, and review existing codebases to identify improvements, refactor legacy implementations, and address security, performance, or maintainability concerns.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex system‑level issues, performing cause analysis alongside application and infrastructure teams.

  • Collaborate with security, infrastructure, and application teams to identify and implement best practices for supported services.

  • Contribute to platform modernisation initiatives, including automation, tooling improvements, and integration with distributed and cloud‑based services.

  • Identify and implement automation and process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and reduce platform risk.

  • Experience of building applications, libraries and utilities from start to finish on z/OS platforms using programming languages such as REXX, s/390 assembler, COBOL, C and Java.

  • Ideally, experience with core mainframe subsystems such as ICSF, RACF, CICS, DB2 and batch scheduling environments.

  • An understanding of key lifecycle-management is a bonus.

  • You will have the ability to work on your own initiative, and you will mentor junior colleagues in the design, implementation, and support of both strategic and legacy mainframe services.

  • You will show the aptitude to acquire the skills and knowledge to run and coordinate the maintenance and support of critical mainframe platforms, tools, and operational processes.
