Our purpose and strategy
Our purpose is Helping Britain Prosper.
Lloyds Banking Group has completed a full refurbishment of its landmark Halifax office following an £116 million investment in the project, reopening for colleagues on 1 December. The investment not only preserves a key piece of Halifax’s architectural heritage but also reinforces the Group’s position as Calderdale’s largest private employer.
The extensive refurbishment of the 317,000 sq. ft office has created a modern, inclusive, and sustainable workspace while preserving the building’s rich heritage. 3,500 Lloyds Banking Group colleague are set to use the site as their primary workplace including nearing 100 students undertaking apprenticeships, graduate placements and T level qualifications.
The Trinity Road site has been a cornerstone of Halifax’s business community since 1973, with its iconic diamond-shaped building, officially opened by the late Queen in 1974 and has supported generations of local families and businesses. The refurbishment ensured that the original features such as listed timber panelling, the glass façade, and the distinctive 5x5 grid light system are still evident within the more modern, industrial design.
The York Stone façade has been meticulously preserved, ensuring the building remains part of Halifax’s architectural landscape.
The extensive refurbishment was delivered in partnership with Wates and Calderdale Council.
Sustainability has been central to the project, with the Halifax site now operating on zero carbon heating via a cutting-edge heat pump system. This innovation, featuring boreholes as deep as London’s Shard, is set to cut over 1,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually and achieve the highest possible EPC A energy rating, creating a more energy efficient environment.
The site uses 100% renewable electricity, and innovative waste reduction measures include recycling stations made from 70% recycled plastic and 30% coffee grounds. Three biodiverse living roofs and a rainwater harvesting system further enhance the building’s environmental credentials.
The Halifax office is a hub for nurturing Yorkshire’s next generation of talent, with increasing numbers of T-level students, apprentices, and graduates from local colleges such as Calderdale and Kirklees gaining hands-on experience in digital and cyber roles. This year nearly 100 students are part of the team at Halifax studying a wide variety of programmes from digital skills to business management.
Colleague well-being and inclusion is at the heart of the refurbishment, with features such as accessible changing places toilets, Braille signage, contemplation rooms, and a free fitness space led by local instructors.
