Job description

We're looking to recruit a Software Engineer to work within the Loans & Affordability Platform in Chester. You will be helping to build, maintain and enhance our Loans journey which process a high volume of all transactions across the UK.

What follows is what you might find our Software Engineer mostly doing, but your experience will flex depending on the team’s needs, and your own aspirations. Our objective is to grow and create an environment where you can do what you enjoy. There will be a huge amount of learning opportunities within this role and you will be working alongside some of the most talented engineers in the industry,

About us

Like the modern Britain we serve, we’re evolving. Investing billions in our people, data and tech to transform the way we meet the ever-changing needs of our 26 million customers. We’re growing with purpose. Join us on our journey and you will too…

What you’ll need…..

  • Understanding of application development and familiarity with technologies such as Java (ideally Java 17/21), Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, and web services.

  • Knowledge of the software development lifecycle, preferably within an Agile environment, with some exposure through academic projects, internships, or personal work.

  • Knowledge of development best practices and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) concepts, with familiarity with tools like Jenkins or similar.

  • Ability to write simple to complex, maintainable code and a willingness to learn how to build modular and testable applications.

  • Ability to learn, troubleshoot and diagnose issues using tools such as Splunk, Dynatrace, or Kibana.

  • Knowledge of version control systems, especially Git.

  • Good understanding of IT service management concepts, such as Change, Incident, and Problem management.

  • Experience with agile development practices and an interest in learning about test automation tools and techniques (e.g., TDD, BDD, Cucumber, Gherkin).

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as IBM Cloud, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Microsoft Azure, or Amazon Web Services (AWS).

  • Better understanding or interest in container technologies like Kubernetes or OpenShift.

  • Familiarity with testing methodologies such as Test Driven Development (TDD) and Behaviour Driven Development (BDD).

It would be great if you also had experience in…

  • UI development using React/JavaScript/TypeScript

About Working for us……

Our focus is to ensure we're inclusive every day, building an organisation that reflects modern society and celebrates diversity in all its forms. We want our people to feel that they belong and can be their best, regardless of background, identity or culture.

We were one of the first major organisations to set goals on diversity in senior roles, create a menopause health package, and a dedicated Working with Cancer initiative.

And it’s why we especially welcome applications from under-represented groups.

We’re disability confident. So if you’d like reasonable adjustments to be made to our recruitment processes, just let us know.

  • A generous pension contribution of up to 15%

  • An annual bonus award, subject to Group performance

  • Share schemes including free shares

  • Benefits you can adapt to your lifestyle, such as discounted shopping

  • 28 days’ holiday, with bank holidays on top
