Prisoners of War
This List of British Officers taken prisoner in the various Theatres of War between August, 1914, and November, 1918 was compiled by Cox & Co.’s Enquiry Office in 1919.
Opened in September 1914, the office provided information on wounded and captured officers to their relatives. It remained open every single day for the remainder of the war.
The list contains the names of more than 8,500 men captured during the conflict, including Harry Young. The data on prisoners was obtained chiefly from the cheques they cashed whilst being held. All passed through the hands of Cox & Co.
The bank, which had been an army agent since 1758, was taken over by Lloyds in 1918.
