Memo to all branch managers, Lloyds Bank, 4th August 1914.

As Britain entered the war, Lloyds Bank head office sent out this notice to all branches. The instruction is clear: ‘Owing to the crisis’, all leave should be suspended.

As banks prepared to reopen after the extended holiday, they anticipated business would be heavier than usual. Consequently they wanted their entire workforce available to deal with the demand.
