Sustainable lighting upgrade at The Mound, Edinburgh
We have replaced the interior and exterior lighting at our Scottish Headquarters with energy efficient and colour-changing LED lights.
We are committed to delivering net zero carbon operations and halving our energy usage by 2030. As part of this journey, we have been upgrading the lighting across our estate over several years.
The Mound is an iconic, grade A listed building which provides unique opportunities and challenges when refreshing the space with modern technology. We’ve been able to navigate these, and the result has been an innovative and dynamic lighting solution both internally and externally.
The delivery of the lighting upgrade has benefitted from multi-partner collaboration between Lloyds Banking Group, Mitie (our lighting installer and facilities management partner), Ridge (our built environment consultants), Casambi (smart lighting control suppliers), and Stoane Lighting (lighting designers and manufacturers).
Externally, we have been able to bring contemporary, colour-changing lighting to an area steeped in rich history and traditional architecture. The lighting brings The Mound to life, particularly at night, and enhances its status as a hub of art and culture in Edinburgh. The unique location of the building on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh also means we are delighted to be able to utilise its lighting to show solidarity with significant dates such as Price and International Day of Persons with Disability.
Sustainable lighting at The Mound
The Mound is an iconic, grade A listed building which provides unique opportunities and challenges when refreshing the space with modern technology.
Internally, we’ve been able to ensure optimum energy efficiency whilst preserving the building’s historical significance. We have been able to demonstrate both a circular economy approach and a focus on saving embodied carbon* by commissioning a bespoke lighting solution for the different legacy lighting features.
The project was able to refurbish and reuse the pendant fittings and engaged with the original lighting manufacturer, Stoane Lighting, to convert them to use modern LED lights and controls. A pivotal challenge in the refurbishment was the careful refurbishment of highly decorative pendant lighting, of which there were a combination of several types of fittings and fixtures.
The project has successfully delivered against our net zero carbon and energy targets, with the new lighting resulting in a 73% reduction in energy consumption externally and a 78% reduction internally.
*The term ‘embodied carbon’ refers to all the carbon dioxide emitted (CO2e) when producing new materials, from the energy used to extract and transport raw materials as well as emissions from the manufacturing and distribution processes.
Stoane Lighting produced an embodied carbon report to help us understand how impactful this circular approach has been, and we have been able to achieve an embodied carbon saving of 48.9% / 28,120 tonnes of CO2e on the internal lighting refurbishment.
This is equivalent to driving an average petrol car three times around the world and 465 tree saplings would need to grow for 10 years to capture this amount of carbon dioxide.
The project has successfully delivered against our net zero carbon and energy targets, with the new lighting resulting in a 73% reduction in energy consumption externally and a 78% reduction internally.
