Job description

JOB TITLE: Lead Software Engineer

LOCATION(S): Leeds

HOURS:  Full time

WORKING PATTERN: Hybrid, 40% (or two days) in the above office location

About this opportunity

As a Lead Software Enginner you will lead the technical development and delivery at Team, Lab and sometimes platform level. They can be a Line Manager who will act as co-lead with the Team PO for overall delivery. In these cases, they will be responsible for overall tech delivery line management & app ownership alongside their own software engineering output. Others will operate as Individual Contributors, who are specialists in particular technology areas and will be narrower and deeper in focus.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Define, communicate and implement our engineering strategy across the Lab. This includes, focusing on patterns, methods, and approaches; working with the teams to implement and embed within our end-to-end engineering activity. 

  • Play an active part in the Engineering Leadership team, supporting others & directly reporting into the Engineering Lead (Band G) for the Lab 

  • Simplify and modernise our technology estate.

  • Leading, inspiring, and managing individuals to continually improve and develop their engineering knowledge and capabilities; working in collaboration with other leaders to maximise the benefit of this capability within our teams. 

  • Helping to bridge the gap between Architecture & Software Engineering bringing the theory to life!

  • Working closely with the product owner to shape and deliver solutions to business problems.

What we need from you?

  • A technical lead, who takes ownership of delivery and is willing to help grow and guide engineers to form successful teams.

  • Experience of leading and embedding engineering transformation initiatives across teams.

  • An understanding of how Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment operates and can be applied in a modern Engineering environment. 

  • Proven experience in hands-on software engineering using a broad range of technologies including those listed below.

  • Recent experience designing and developing complex Aptitude Studio, Oracle PL/SQL and Unix Bash/Korne Shell components for a financial services organisation.

  • CI/CD/DevOps tooling experience including Jenkins and Urban Code Deploy.

  • Proven debugging skills and lead by example attitude

  • Design Patterns.

  • Agile software development approach.

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills and an enthusiasm for advocating best practice across Product & Engineering.
