JOB TITLE: Senior Software Engineer

SALARY: £70,929 - £78,810

LOCATION:  Edinburgh

HOURS: Full time (5 days, 35 hours) 

WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time, at our Edinburgh office location

Through the ongoing development, modernisation and simplification of the shared platforms and services that sit at the heart of the Insurance Pensions and Investments business, the Legacy Maintenance and Migrations Lab plays a key role in the realisation of this vision.  

Here’s how you’ll make a difference:  

  • Lead, inspire, and support individuals to continually improve and develop their engineering knowledge and capabilities. 

  • Help us define and communicate our engineering strategy, methods, and approaches.  

  • Work with our teams and partners to define, agree and implement optimal approaches, utilising the right tools and techniques to achieve the best possible outcomes for the business. 

  • Ensure work within the team is in accordance with the values and behaviours and risk parameters of the bank. 

  • A natural facilitator and decision-maker, you'll enable cross team collaboration within the Lab and other Platforms 

What you’ll be doing: 

  • You’ll support the execution of technical delivery for the Retirement Account applications within the lab across the full build/test/deploy lifecycle. 

  • Use design patterns, experience and best practices to design, test and amend complex programs/scripts and integration software services.  

  • Support agile software development to enable continuous improvement within the team. 

  • Engineer software solutions that are stable, scalable, performant, accessible, testable and secure by utilising endorsed technologies and applying common build patterns to minimise technical debt.    

  • Promote active application custodianship by participating in incident root-cause analysis to identify and act on learnings.   

  • Lead and mentor software engineers in their technical development within the team, driving a collaborative culture    

  • Provide Domain Expert input into systems development, integrations and architecture. 

  • Contribute to the success of the wider Engineering Community by following industry standards, improving work quality through peer reviews, and sharing your knowledge to foster growth.

What you’ll need:

  • Significant experience with Java/J2EE, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Struts Framework, XSLT, SQL, WebDriver IO (Test Framework), Urban Code, Jira, Align, Confluence & Service Now. 

  • Knowledge & exposure to modern software development pipeline toolsets including Jenkins, GitHub and quality scanning apps like SonarQube and NexusIQ   

  • Conversant in Quality Engineering (QE) and DevOps processes and technologies. 

  • Strong understanding and experience of designing, building, and operating front end applications  

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills and a passion for advocating quality across Product & Engineering    

  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with Product and Design colleagues to drive outcomes for customers.  

  • Engineering experience working within an Agile framework 

  • Proven Software Engineering Skills 

  • IT skillset with experience of delivering software products and solutions is essential 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 

  • Exposure to IT solutions across various systems, technologies, and data sources 

  • Excellent interpersonal and team working skills.  

  • Experience of technical guidance and mentoring peers and junior engineers 

  • Experience leading a team of engineers (not managing).
