Job description

JOB TITLE: Lead Data Engineer

SALARY: The salary banding is £90,440 - £106,400

LOCATION: Chester or Manchester

HOURS: 35 hours, full time

WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time, at one of our office sites.

About this opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity to join our Consumer Lending team! You'll play a pivotal role in crafting and implementing data solutions on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) collaborating with multi-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of data products into our new data architecture, driving innovation and optimising data utilisation.

What will I be doing?

As a Lead Data Engineer, you’ll be expected to show not only excellent technical skills, but demonstrate key leadership traits. These will include critical thinking and thought leadership on a range of topics and you’ll demonstrate qualities to effectively communicate these ideas to others. At the same time acting, supporting and providing strategic solutions and decisions is a cornerstone of a role at this level.

Strong data and software engineering are necessary at this level; not only SQL and dataframe technologies but understanding the architecture and standard methodologies around effectively employing big data solutions for Cloud based data warehouses.

Appreciation of the impacts of data modelling to take advantage of the traits of each framework would be expected too. Traditional programming languages such as Python and Java are expected to be enhanced with use of modern takes on standard methodologies, such as Golang, Zig or Rust. A strong appreciation of FinOps and appropriate skills to optimise both new and existing software and data deployments are critical also.

Finally, an approach that embeds the best of DevOps and appropriate CI/CD tooling to provide effective, reliable and timely deployments would be second nature for the correct candidate.

At this level a wide range of additional skills would be expected, though some worth particular mention would be data management and governance, risk controls and frameworks, and experience across a diverse range of different work settings.
