Our Decision Science colleagues

Elaine has been with the Group for over 7 years, working across a range of projects and teams. In her opinion, it’s the people that makes Lloyds Banking Group such a great place to work.
What's important to you about your job?
I get a real buzz from using advanced analytical techniques to automate customer lending decisions and delivering powerful insight to help drive business decisions. It is also important to me that my job has a tangible and positive impact. Credit Risk is an area where data science directly impacts our customers. Lending applications is often a customer's first interaction with Lloyds Banking Group and my team ensures we are making the right decisions for our customers and also helping provide a frictionless customer journey through predictive modelling.
So for example, when you click apply for a credit card online, it is one of my teams models that determines your outcome and I think that is quite cool!
How would you describe the culture?
Lloyds Banking Group really champions personal development and there are always opportunities for growth. Since joining as an entry level analyst 7.5 years ago I have worked across many different teams on a diverse range of technically challenging projects. No two projects have been the same and that, for me, makes the job interesting and fun.
I also think it is a very exciting time to work in data science. Our Group strategy is to digitalise and for me, the core of that, is to use new data, tools and predictive analytical techniques to ensure we are constantly improving our capabilities for automation and insight. There will always be quite a lot to learn as technology is constantly evolving!

Christopher leads a team of risk modellers, who help to keep the bank safe and ensure fair outcomes for our customers. He’s proud of the collaborative, supportive attitude of our colleagues, as well as the emphasis on involvement in the local communities.
What's important to you about your job?
I enjoy the intellectual challenge of the work and delivering measurable results. This is a job for someone who enjoys the challenge of solving analytical problems, and learning new things. Although it is a technical role, it also requires good judgement grounded in an understanding of the fundamentals of commercial banking and credit risk assessment. What’s also very important to me is helping colleagues in my team to develop themselves and achieve their career goals.
How would you describe the culture?
The environment for colleagues is inclusive, open and led by the Group’s core values. Colleagues support each other and collaborate on projects, while not being afraid to challenge constructively and speak up. Indeed, this is actively encouraged as we recognise the value of diversity of thought in our ideas and decision making.

Micky has worked at Lloyds Banking Group for twelve years, and loves that the Group actively encourages and supports colleagues to expand their knowledge and build their skill set, so that they can be the best that they can be.
What's important to you about your job?
Before my time at Lloyds Banking Group, I’ve experienced the diversity and fast paced environment I need by moving around. I was based in the UK working with various businesses across Europe, I moved to live in Germany and then to New York before coming back to the UK to join the Group.
What I love about the department I work in (and why I have stayed for the last twelve years!) is it’s a fast paced dynamic environment and the work is diverse without needing to look elsewhere. From the day to day work in my current role, which taps into the breadth of experience and knowledge gained throughout my career (from technical to project management to soft skills), expanding out to the department which delivers for all portfolios within the bank (both retail and commercial), covering all areas of risk/losses (application, regulatory, provisional etc) with the flexibility to move into, and focus on any of these areas.
I’m also encouraged and supported in being the best I can be, by building my knowledge and skill set. Therefore I’m always learning and getting better at what I do. I’m responsible for delivering something tangible but I’m given a high level of flexibility, which helps me maintain a healthy work life balance. And I work, and socialise outside work, with some of the brightest and sociable people in the industry, ranging in age from late teens to early fifties.
All this makes work a challenging but fun place to be where I can put my skills to good use, I can get the thrill out of delivering something important, I can continually learn and grow but I can also have a life outside work!

Christopher is based in Bristol and has worked at Lloyds Banking Group for eighteen years.
How would you describe what you do at work to a friend?
I lead an experienced team of risk modellers responsible for building and maintaining commercial risk models. These keep the bank safe by measuring our credit risk, which enables us to effectively manage risk and ensure fair decisions and outcomes for our customers.
