JOB TITLE: Engineering Lead

SALARY: £124,653 - £146,650

LOCATION: Halifax

HOURS: 35 hours, full time

WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time, at one of our office sites.

About this opportunity

The Identity & Authentication Platform delivers capabilities to enable LBG business areas secure client and digital authentication and identity across all their digital channels. The Platform delivers core products including Identity & Authentication as a Service, giving end-to-end packaged services of several components for self-serve consumption to give strategic capabilities of centralised and reusable authentication services, a suite of authentication methods (either 1 or multi-factor depending on regulation obligations) and a scaled, centralised and hosting agnostic Authorisation as a Service capability consisting of a Token Exchange component and the provision of a signed token for Channels to use downstream, allowing management of their access.

As a Lab Engineering Lead you'll be responsible for building out the engineering capability and working with partners who will deliver exceptional colleague and customer interactions through technology, drawing upon your engineering expertise, whilst being open minded to the opportunities that modern technology, automation and Artificial Intelligence provides.

What will I be doing?

  • Lead the software engineering teams in designing, developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining high-quality, high-availability and scalable software applications and systems.

  • Establish and enforce best practices, standards, and methodologies for software engineering, ensuring alignment with our business goals, customer needs, and industry trends.

  • Collaborate with the Lab Product Lead, Solutions Architects, and other stakeholders to define and prioritise the software engineering roadmap, scope, and deliverables.

  • Collaborate with the Lab Product Lead to manage the software engineering budget and resources, allocating them efficiently and effectively across products and initiatives.

  • Collaborate with and drive the direction of technology capability we need to employ in the Identity & Authentication space where the delivery relies on external platforms / vendors.

  • Provide technical guidance and direction, as well as firsthand support, to the software engineering team, fostering a culture of innovation, excellence, and continuous improvement.

  • Lead teams in embracing the best engineering practices like Test Driven Development, code reviews, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery etc.

  • Hire, train, coach, and evaluate the performance of the software engineering team, developing their skills and career growth.

  • Stay abreast of the latest technologies, tools, and techniques in private and public cloud, AI, machine learning, and software engineering, and evaluate their potential and feasibility for our products and services

What you’ll need

  • A working knowledge of Authentication and Authorisation concepts

  • Software Engineering, ideally with a focus on Java

  • Strong experience of API design and development

  • Experience of working with containerised microservices

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear and actionable business outcomes.

  • Advanced knowledge of agile methodologies.

  • Practical experience of Public and Private Cloud.

Highly desirable Skills

  • A working knowledge of Authentication and Authorisation concepts

  • Exposure to TDD

  • Exposure to performance engineering/cloud optimisation

  • A good understanding of Networking & API Gateways

  • CI/CD and monitoring tools

  • Containers, orchestration & service mesh
